Home Sweet Home: Your Guide to Giving Back This Fall

As the weather cools down and we return from our summer vacations, there’s something comforting about coming home. The cozy routines, the familiar faces, and the anticipation of the holiday season ahead remind us of the importance of “home”. At Community Housing Network (CHN), we know that home is more than four walls—it’s safety, stability, and the foundation for a brighter future. 

The holiday season is just around the corner, and while we gather with family, friends, coworkers, and neighbors to celebrate, countless others across Metro Detroit don’t have that luxury. Many are still searching for a safe, affordable place to call home. You can make a real difference this season—and it’s simpler than you think. 

One easy, meaningful way? Host your own “Sweet” fundraiser with the communities you’re part of. By sharing laughter and delicious treats, you’ll also be raising critical funds to support Community Housing Network’s mission of helping local families and individuals facing homelessness and housing instability. 

Together, small acts can create big change—and every cookie, cupcake, or pie shared can help bring a family closer to a home of their own.  

How it Works 
Hosting a fundraiser is easier than you might think. Here are a few ideas to get you started: 

• Cookie Decorating Contest – Gather supplies, invite participants to show off their decorating skills. 

• Chili Cook-Off – Ask entrants to bring their best chili recipe, then taste-test and crown the champion. 

• Baking Competition – From pies to cakes, see who can whip up the ultimate dessert. 

• Gingerbread House Construction – A holiday-season favorite that’s perfect for families and teams. 

For these ideas, charge a fee to enter or set a suggested donation, the winner(s) get a portion of the collected funds, while the rest is donated, usually an even 50% split. The winner is chosen by a vote, or by the organizers. You get to decide the details and make it fun for your group!
