Section 8 Waitlist
Need a Section 8 voucher? Our staff is constantly monitoring and working with the public housing commissions that serve Southeast Michigan to know when a Section 8 waiting list will be open to take new names. We will alert you via email regarding public housing commission Section 8 waiting list openings and how to apply. Sign up for the alert list. Â
*Please Note: Some emails may mistakenly end up in your spam/junk folder. Please check there for emails from chnsection8list@chninc.net and add it to your safe senders list.*Â
*PLEASE NOTE: Due to budget constraints, MSHDA’s Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) program will not release any new vouchers for the foreseeable future. During this time, MSHDA will close all HCV waitlists to new additions starting July 1, 2024, and waitlists will remain closed until the budget allows for new vouchers to be released. This closure includes households that would qualify for waitlist entry via the homeless preference.
The HCV Program helps people who are homeless get long-term housing support. This policy gives priority to those who are currently homeless, so they can be added to the MSHDA HCV waiting list faster.
How does it work?
- Local Housing Assessment Resource Agencies (called HARAs) help add eligible people to the waiting list by conducting a screening.
- They use a list of people experiencing homelessness (called a “By Name List”) to prioritize who gets added to MSHDA HCV waiting list.
- Proof of homelessness must be documented within 30 days of applying.
