A Journey Back Home: Chanda’s Story
For 54-year-old Chanda Jones, walking through the front door of her Sterling Heights home still feels like a dream.
After building a life in Sterling Heights years prior, Chanda’s landlord decided to sell the home. She and her young children had to abruptly relocate and start over – which caused emotional turmoil for the family.
“It was devastating,” she recalled. “I had to pack up my kids and move.”
Chanda and her children moved throughout Macomb County for the next few years, facing long, stressful commutes to school. In 2024, she connected with Community Housing Network (CHN), and with their support, her family was able to move to a high-opportunity neighborhood in Sterling Heights.
Her new home not only reduced the strain of long commutes but also gave back the stability her family once knew.
“I’m so grateful for Community Housing Network,” she said. “I’m now back where I want to be.”
Chanda was one of 17,008 people CHN helped last year, investing $12.5 million into the community, so children, families and people with disabilities can live in stable, dignified homes with more opportunity for upward mobility.
Having a safe place to call home truly makes a difference – it’s a foundation for stability and opportunity. It allows families to focus on work, education, and personal growth without the stress of uncertainty.
For Chanda, this move is more than just a new address; it’s a new beginning for herself and her children. She’s excited about the space she now has to pursue her passion for gardening and landscaping.
“I’m looking forward to driving up to my home and seeing the beautiful flowers blooming,” she said. “Community Housing Network’s help has been lifechanging.”
With more support, resources and affordable housing development, CHN can help more families like Chanda’s have a safe, affordable place to call home.
