May is recognized as Affordable Housing Month, a time to raise awareness about the importance of safe, stable, and affordable housing and the impact it has on individuals, children, families, and communities. At Community Housing Network, this mission is at the heart of everything we do. Every day, we work to ensure that people across our communities have access not just to housing, but to supportive services as well.

Affordable housing provides stability for families, allows children to succeed in school, supports better physical and mental health, and creates the foundation needed to build thriving communities. Yet for many individuals and families, affordable housing remains out of reach due to rising costs, limited availability, and ongoing economic challenges.

That’s why Community Housing Network continues to invest in creating and maintaining housing opportunities for some of our community’s most vulnerable neighbors. Today, our 12 multifamily housing communities across Michigan provide 311 affordable housing units for low-income families and individuals living with disabilities. These communities are home to 949 people — including 332 children.

But the work we do extends far beyond just creating housing units. We believe that getting someone into a stable home of their own is the first step toward long-term stability and independence. Through supportive services, case management, housing navigation, and community partnerships, we help residents overcome barriers and access the resources they need to succeed. Whether it’s helping a parent secure stable housing for their children, supporting someone transitioning out of homelessness, or assisting an individual living with a disability to maintain independence, every effort is centered around creating lasting change.

Affordable Housing Month is also an opportunity to recognize that the need continues to grow. Across Metro Detroit and throughout the state, too many households are forced to choose between paying rent or putting food on the table for their children and families. Expanding access to affordable housing requires collaboration between nonprofits, government agencies, community leaders, and supporters who believe everyone deserves a safe place to call home.

At Community Housing Network, we remain committed to being part of the solution. For more than two decades, we have worked alongside community partners, donors, volunteers, and advocates to create housing opportunities that strengthen lives and neighborhoods alike. As we acknowledge Affordable Housing Month, we invite our community to learn more about the importance of affordable housing, advocate for continued investment in long-term housing solutions, and join us in creating a future where everyone has the stability and support, they deserve.
